Release Note 2016

MIKE SHE

Introduction

Welcome to MIKE SHE Release 2016. In this Release Note you will find information about new features of MIKE SHE, and what you need to know in order to install and get started with Release 2016.

MIKE SHE is a modelling system for integrated catchment hydrology. MIKE SHE covers all aspects of the entire land phase of the hydrological cycle with specific strength in the dynamic  interaction between surface water and sub-surface water (ground water).

System requirements

The recommended minimum system requirements are:

Operating systems Fully supported operating systems *
Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit), Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) and Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (64 bit).

Non-supported but partially tested operating systems **
Windows 8.1 Pro (32 bit), Windows 10 Pro (32 bit) and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Service Pack 1 (64 bit).
Note that Release 2016 is the last release supporting 32 bit operating systems.
Processor x86 or x64, 2.2 GHz (or higher)
Memory (RAM) 2 GB (or higher)
Hard disk 40 GB (or higher)
Monitor SVGA, resolution 1024x768 in 16 bit colour
Graphics adapter 64 MB RAM (256 MB RAM or higher recommended), 24 bit true colour
File system NTFS
Software requirements .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 4.0 (Full Profile)

* Fully supported operating systems are systems that have been tested in accordance with MIKE's Quality Assurance procedures and where warranty and software maintenance agreement conditions apply.

** Non-supported but partially tested operating systems are systems, which are not officially supported by the MIKE software products. These operating systems have only undergone very limited testing for the purpose of MIKE software, but the software and key features are likely to work. Installation of MIKE software on a non-supported operating system is done so at the user's own risk. The MIKE software warranty and software maintenance agreement conditions do not apply for unsupported operating systems and DHI is under no obligation to provide assistance or troubleshooting for cases where the software is being used on a non-supported operating system.

Please note that single user installations are not allowed on server operating systems. Also, when running a fully supported operating system as a 'guest operating system' on a virtualisation platform, it is automatically downgraded to a non-supported operating system under the conditions provided above.

Installation

^ top

To install MIKE SHE, please choose MIKE Zero in the ‘MIKE Setup’ dialogue box that appears when inserting the MIKE software 2016 USB and clicking the Setup.exe or executing the Setup.exe file from the downloaded installation files. Press the ‘Install’ button to begin installation.

The setup programme will automatically install all necessary files and folders on your computer.

Licence file and dongle

^ top

To use MIKE SHE in licenced mode, please follow these steps:

  1. You can retrieve the MIKE software licence file (DhiLicense.dat) via the Internet. This requires a working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address. The licence file can be retrieved in two ways:
    • During installation of the MIKE software
    • After installation of the MIKE software, by launching the DHI License Updater through the Windows Start menu
  2. To retrieve your licence file during installation of MIKE software, select ‘Local’ when prompted to ‘Select license type’. In the following dialogue box, select ‘Internet’. At the end of the installation process, you will be prompted to insert your DHI dongle. Insert the dongle and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. To update your licence file using the License Updater, simply launch the DHI License Updater and follow the on-screen instructions. On Windows 8, search for DHI License Updater.
  4. Alternatively, the licence file can simply be copied to the \Program files\DHI\2016\License or Program files(x86)\DHI\2016\License directory.
  5. After completed installation, you should ensure that your hardware key is attached to the system.

Product invocation

^ top

Launch 'MIKE Zero' from the Windows Start menu. Then you can select MIKE SHE from within the MIKE Zero Shell.

Starting MIKE SHE without a DHI configured hardware key and valid licence files will cause the programme to run in demo mode. If this happens, a message box will inform you during programme initialisation. When running in demo mode, MIKE SHE supplies full access to all editors, computational engines and editing facilities. However, restrictions apply to the setups that can actually be executed as a model simulation.

New features

^ top

Every new release of MIKE SHE consists of new modules, new features or corrections to significant inconsistencies and problems discovered in previous releases. Below, please find short descriptions of the most significant news in Release 2016 for MIKE SHE specifically and for MIKE SHE related options in the general MIKE Zero framework.

MIKE Zero

Module/type

New feature

Start Page

The MIKE Zero start page has been extended with an extra window that provides you with a faster access to resources and information

MIKE Zero Toolbox
New GIS tool, Shp2Xyz, to extract point, polyline and polygon information from shape files
Time Series Comparator

New tool that can compare two time series files, compute some performance measures and produce relevant comparison plots

Result Viewer

Option to export velocity vectors to a shape file

MIKE SHE
MIKE SHE WM

Rivers and Lakes coupling:
Additional river model coupling: MIKE SHE can now be coupled with the new MIKE HYDRO River as an additional option to the existing MIKE 11 coupling. MIKE HYDRO River is the new generation of our River modellling package.

MIKE SHE WM and WQ
Rivers and Lakes coupling:
MIKE HYDRO River and MIKE 11 can utilize the latest generation of our one-dimensional simulation kernel for river modelling; MIKE1D. MIKE1D offers improved performance through parallelization and simulates both river hydraulics as well as water quality and hence includes a potential performance increase in MIKE SHE applications.

Known defects and workarounds

No known defects or workarounds.

Fixed issues

^ top

A service pack includes fixes to inconveniences and errors and minor modifications to the official release.
Please note that the service packs are accumulative, i.e. corrections and fixes released with a previous service pack are included in the newest service pack as well.

Release 2016 Service Pack 3

Error/Inconvenience/New feature

Status

MIKE SHE PP

Routing error in the Simple OL - if the lowest OL zone in the Simple OL is not connected to a river, then water is removed from the model, but did not appear in the Water Balance output. This issue led to large water balance "errors", because the water was managed correctly, but went missing in the Water Balance. The problem seems to arise mostly when there is a misalignment of the zones, and some cells in the lowest zone are not connected to a river. Now, there is a more detailed message written to the log file, and the lowest OL Zone is always connected to the river.
Fixed

MIKE SHE Tools

In the Grid Calculator a generic Power function was missing. For example, you can now calculate A^(1/3), or A^(-1).
Fixed

MIKE SHE - MIKE Urban coupling

In the MIKE Urban coupling with MIKE SHE, the upstream pipe diameter was used instead of the downstream pipe diameter. This resulted in incorrect downstream top-of-pipe elevations, in some conditions. This probably only affects models that are using the Grouting option in the MIKE Urban coupling.
Fixed

Error/Inconvenience/New feature

Status

MIKE SHE PP

Pre-processor crash obtained when creating inundation areas.  Error seems to occur only for a rather specific combination of branch point locations.
Fixed

MIKE SHE WM

Water movement model stops with  "PROGRAMMING ERROR: Calling Mrotation_GetStartEndScheme for a negative time interval." The error occurs for special occasions where WM automatically adjusts UZ and SZ time steps during the simulation.
Fixed

MIKE SHE WM

Rivers and lakes: Error when running MIKE SHE simulation coupled to MIKE HYDRO River if Routing elements are defined in river branches where no cross sections exist - and a routing element is included which utilise Qh-relations for water level definitions.
