MIKE 21

Introduction

Welcome to MIKE 21 Release 2016. In this Release Note you will find information about new features of MIKE 21, and what you need to know in order to install and get started with Release 2016.

MIKE 21 is the world's leading modelling package for 2D free surface flow, waves, sediment transport and environmental processes. It is the true work horse of estuarine and coastal modelling with a wider range of facilities and modules than any similar package.

System requirements

The recommended minimum system requirements are:

Non-supported but partially tested operating systems **
Windows 8.1 Pro (32 bit), Windows 10 Pro (32 bit) and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Service Pack 1 (64 bit).
Note that Release 2016 is the last release supporting 32 bit operating systems.

Hard disk 40 GB (or higher)
Monitor SVGA, resolution 1024x768 in 16 bit colour
Graphics adapter 64 MB RAM (256 MB RAM or higher recommended), 32 bit true colour ***

Software requirements .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 4.0 (Full Profile)

* Fully supported operating systems are systems that have been tested in accordance with MIKE's Quality Assurance procedures and where warranty and software maintenance agreement conditions apply.

** Non-supported but partially tested operating systems are systems, which are not officially supported by the MIKE software products. These operating systems have only undergone very limited testing for the purpose of MIKE software, but the software and key features are likely to work. Installation of MIKE software on a non-supported operating system is done so at the user's own risk. The MIKE software warranty and software maintenance agreement conditions do not apply for unsupported operating systems and DHI is under no obligation to provide assistance or troubleshooting for cases where the software is being used on a non-supported operating system.

*** MIKE 21 Flow Model FM utilising GPU requires a Nvidia graphics cards with compute capability 2.0 or higher. See https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-gpus. Please note that some of these graphics cards have varying performance in single compared to double precission calculations.

Please note that single user installations are not allowed on server operating systems. Also, when running a fully supported operating system as a 'guest operating system' on a virtualisation platform, it is automatically downgraded to a non-supported operating system under the conditions provided above.

Installation

To install MIKE 21, please choose MIKE Zero in the ‘MIKE Setup’ dialogue box that appears when inserting the MIKE software 2016 USB and clicking teh Setup.exe or executing the Setup.exe file from the downloaded installation files. Press the ‘Install’ button to begin installation.

The setup programme will automatically install all necessary files and folders on your computer.

Licence file and dongle

To use MIKE 21 in licenced mode, please follow these steps:

  1. You can retrieve the MIKE software licence file (DhiLicense.dat) via the Internet. This requires a working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address. The licence file can be retrieved in two ways:
    • During installation of the MIKE software
    • After installation of the MIKE software, by launching the DHI License Updater through the Windows Start menu
  2. To retrieve your licence file during installation of MIKE software, select ‘Local’ when prompted to ‘Select license type’. In the following dialogue box, select ‘Internet’. At the end of the installation process, you will be prompted to insert your DHI dongle. Insert the dongle and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. To update your licence file using the License Updater, simply launch the DHI License Updater and follow the on-screen instructions. On Windows 8, search for DHI License Updater.
  4. Alternatively, the licence file can simply be copied to the \Program files\DHI\2016\License or Program files(x86)\DHI\2016\License directory.
  5. After completed installation, you should ensure that your hardware key is attached to the system.

Product invocation

^ topLaunch MIKE Zero from the Windows Start menu.

Starting MIKE 21 without a DHI configured hardware key and valid licence files will cause the programme to run in demo mode. If this happens, a message box will inform you during programme initialisation. When running in demo mode, MIKE 21 supplies full access to all editors, computational engines and editing facilities. However, restrictions apply to the setups that can actually be executed as a model simulation.

Parallelisation FM

New parallelisation parameters: Number of subdomains and Number of threads per subdomain and a new Use GPU checkbox if supported GPUs are detected

  • Setting Number of subdomains=1 corresponds to using OpenMP in previous versions
  • Per default the Number of subdomains is set equal to the number of cores on the computer.
    This setting can be changed under User settings.
  • Selecting the Use GPU checkbox will present a list of all supported GPUs.
    Specify which GPUs to use for simulation using this list.

NEW simple yet faster Cartesian grid based MIKE 21 solver designed for inland flooding applications.
The Flood Screening Tool (FST) option introduces an additional numerical solver for the grid-based MIKE 21.
A diffusive wave approach brings a simpler and thus faster numerical solution that enables even more rapid flood screening outputs.

It combines detailed 2D modelling of currents and waves with a constrained morphological model, making it possible to undertake stable and robust modelling of shoreline evolution in 2D environments.
