MIKE 21

Introduction


Welcome to MIKE 21 Release 2012. In this release note you will find information about new features of MIKE 21, and what you need to know in order to install and get started with Release 2012.

MIKE 21 is the world's leading modelling package for 2D free surface flow, waves, sediment transport, and environmental processes. It is the true work horse of estuarine and coastal modelling with a wider range of facilities and modules than any similar package.


System requirements


The recommended minimum system requirements are:

Operating systems

Fully supported operating systems *
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (32 bit), Windows Vista Business Service Pack 2 (64 bit) and Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 (32 and 64 bit). For the latest update please refer to the FAQ

Non-supported but partially tested operating systems **
Windows Vista Business Service Pack 2 (32 bit), Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Service Pack 2 (32-bit)  and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Service pack 1 (64-bit). For the latest update please refer to the FAQ
Processor 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium or higher and compatibles, or equivalents
Memory (RAM) 2 GB (or higher)
Hard disk 40 GB (or higher)
Monitor SVGA, resolution 1024x768 in 16 bit colour
Graphics adapter 64 MB RAM (256 MB RAM or higher recommended), 24 bit true colour
Media DVD drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs is required for installation
File system NTFS
Software requirements .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 4.0 (Full Profile)

* Fully supported operational systems are systems that have been tested in accordance with MIKE by DHI's Quality Assurance procedures and where warranty and software maintenance agreement conditions apply.

** Non-supported but partially tested operating systems are systems, which are not officially supported by the MIKE by DHI software products. These operating systems have only undergone very limited testing for the purpose of MIKE by DHI software, but the software and key features are likely to work. Installation of MIKE by DHI software on a non-supported operating system is done so at the user's own risk. The MIKE by DHI software warranty and software maintenance agreement conditions do not apply for unsupported operating systems and DHI is under no obligation to provide assistance or troubleshooting for cases where the software is being used on a non-supported operating system.

Please note that single user installations are not allowed on server operating systems. Also, when running a fully supported operating system as a 'guest operating system' on a virtualisation platform, it is automatically downgraded to a non-supported operating system under the conditions provided above.


Installation

To install MIKE 21 from the MIKE software 2012 DVD, please choose 'MIKE 21' in the 'MIKE by DHI Setup' dialogue box that appears when you insert the DVD and then press the 'Install' button.

The setup programme automatically installs all necessary MIKE 21 files and folders on your PC. Additionally, a 'MIKE by DHI 2012' entry is created, which contains icons for various MIKE Zero and MIKE 21 utilities and links to documentation.


Licence file & dongle

To use MIKE 21 in licenced mode please follow these steps:

  1. You can retrieve the MIKE software licence file (DhiLicense.dat) via the Internet. This requires a working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address. The licence file can be retrieved in two ways:
  • During installation of MIKE software
  • After installation of the MIKE software, by launching the DHI License Updater through the start menu
  1. To retrieve your licence file during installation of the MIKE software, select 'Local' when prompted to select the type of License Management, and then select 'Internet' and follow the on-screen instructions. Attach your hardware when prompted.
  2. To update your licence file using the License Updater, simply launch "Start -> Programs -> MIKE by DHI 2012 -> DHI License Updater" and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Alternatively, the licence file can simply be copied from the supply medium (attachment to e-mail from DHI or DVD) in \Program Files\DHI\2012\License or Program Files (x86)\DHI\2012\License.
  4. After completed installation, you should ensure that your hardware key is attached to the system.

Product invocation

To start MIKE 21, go to Start -> Programs -> MIKE by DHI 2012 -> MIKE Zero and select 'MIKE Zero'. Then you can select MIKE 21 from within the MIKE Zero Shell

Starting MIKE 21 without a DHI configured Hardware Key and valid licence files will cause the programme to run in demo mode. If this happens, a message box will inform you during programme initialisation. When running in demo mode, MIKE 21 supplies full access to all editors, computational engines and editing facilities. However, restrictions apply to the setups that can actually be executed as a model simulation.

    "type_of_vertical_transport = 1" (new default) triggers that vertical movement
    of a particle is based on its relative position in the water column (similar to PT).
    "type_of_vertical_transport = 0" use the particles absolute z-position.
    To reproduce old setups manually set "type_of_vertical_transport = 0".

  • DFSU data files: Static information in dfsu files was saved in single precision. This could result in inaccurate node point positions for output dfsu data files where the domain area were defined away from the origin of the map projection.
    The static information in a dfsu file is now saved in double-precision
  • Data Manager:
    - cannot open files larger than approx. 2 GB
    - subtraction of dfsu file may lead to wrong values in areas near dry points
  • Mesh Generator: missing functionality in using Mesh Analysis option by water depth
  • Plot Composer:
    - Problems with displaying color legend interval
    - Profile plot did not convert units in items before display
    - Grid plot fails to import land correctly in a number of cases when using alternate units
    - New feature: Dfsu plot can now plot vectors in a structured mesh
  • Data Viewer: Fails to plot correct vertical profile with correct y-axis unit when using alternate units
