Installation^ top
To install MIKE SHE, please choose 'MIKE SHE in the 'MIKE by DHI Setup' dialog that appears when inserting the MIKE software 2011 DVD and then press the 'Install' button.
The setup program automatically installs all necessary MIKE SHE files and folders on your PC. Additionally, a 'MIKE SHE' group is created, containing the icon for MIKE SHE.
License File and Dongle^ top
To use MIKE SHE in licensed-mode please follow these steps:
- Make sure that the provided dongle is attached to the computer (parallel or USB port - for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition USB port only)
- The dongle driver is installed automatically during the setup of the program
- The MIKE software license file (DhiLicense.dat) may be retrieved using the Internet. A working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address are required. The license file may be retrieved in two ways:
- During installation of MIKE software
- After installation of MIKE software, by launching the License Updater through the start menu
- To retrieve your license file during installation of MIKE Software, select “Local” when prompted to select the type of License Management, and then select “Internet” and follow the on-screen instructions
- To update your license file using the License Updater, simply launch “Start->Programs->MIKE by DHI 2011->DHI License Updater” and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Alternatively, the license file can simply be copied from the supply medium (attachment to e-mail from DHI or CD/DVD) in \Program Files\DHI\2011\License or Program Files (x86)\DHI\2011\License.
Product Invocation^ top
To start MIKE SHE, select the 'MIKE SHE icon under the 'MIKE SHE' group, or go to Start -> Programs -> MIKE by DHI 2011 -> MIKE SHE and select 'MIKE SHE'.
Starting MIKE SHE without a DHI configured Software Key and valid license files causes the program to run in Demo mode. If this happens, a message box will inform you during program initialization. Running in Demo mode, MIKE SHE supplies full access to all editors, computational engines and editing facilities. However, restrictions apply to the setups that can actually be executed as a model simulation.

Multicell OL - Added to MIKE SHE in the 2011 Release, is a new multi-cell overland flow module. This method has been available in MIKE FLOOD for several years with very good results and has now been added to MIKE SHE. The Multicell Overland flow module allows you to use higher resolution topography data to adjust the overland flow between cells and map the refined water depth onto the refined topography data. The method generates much more accurate water levels at a fraction of the calculation time required for a similarly refined numerical grid.
-
Parallelization - The MIKE SHE engines have been re-engineered to take advantage of multiple processors and 64-bit operating systems. This has lead to dramatic improvements in the computational efficiency of MIKE SHE. In particular, the efficiency is much improved for the unsaturated zone models. The UZ module is highly scaleable because each of the UZ columns can be calculated independently of one another. The SZ and OL modules are not as scalable, because the communication overhead during the solution. Never-the-less, the SZ and OL modules are significantly faster. The total efficiency improvement for every model will be different, but you can probably expect a speed up factor between 1.8 and 2.5 for a typical MIKE SHE model on a four-core computer.
-
AUTOCAL multi-core support - Along with the parallelization of the engines, the AUTOCAL module has also been re-engineered to support multi-core computers. If you have a multi-core computer, AUTOCAL will automatically send separate simulations to each of the cores. The number of cores supported depends on your available licenses, which by default is four simulations per computer. If you want to use more than four cores, please contact your local DHI office for additional run-time licenses.
-
ECO Lab support - ECO Lab is a generic equation solver for water quality in MIKE by DHI software. In the 2011 Release, ECO Lab has been coupled to MIKE SHE's Water Quality module. This will allow you to calculate any kinetic, multi-species solute reaction. This includes, for example, chain decay of solutes, multi-pathway reactions, etc. The ECO Lab implementation will allow you to calculate ecological relationships to hydrology.
OL boundaries - In the 2011 Release, you can now define time varying boundary conditions for the Overland flow module.
-
Windows 7 - Release 2011 supports Windows 7.^ top
Minor changes
-
Creating dfs0 files from Excel - in earlier versions, you could import Excel data from the Create button. However, the functionality was limited to Excel 97 and was not very flexible. This import function has been removed and you should use the import from Excel function in the MZero Toolbox tool "Time Series Batch Conversion". This is a much more comprehensive tool and supports all versions of Excel.
-
ET Surface depth value of zero - A zero value is now allowed for the ET Surface Depth, which implies that the capillary pressure is zero.
-
Vegetation grid code value of zero - A zero value is no longer allowed. In earlier versions a zero value generated an error.
-
Threshold gradient for overland flow - We have done quite a lot of testing on this parameter in 2010. In a Release 2009 service pack, the default was changed to 1e-6, which has been shown to be too small. The default value has been increased to 1e-5. Run times are closely correlated to this value. Please see the documentation for a more detailed description of this value.
-
Actual Specific Yield added to PP data - The actual specific yield used for the top layer of the SZ model has always been taken from the UZ data based on the difference between the Saturated water content and the field capacity. This must be done to ensure a consistent water table elevation in the UZ and SZ models. In the 2011 Release, this is now reflected in the pre-processed data.
-
Particle Tracking - Particle ID and coordinates have been added to the PT Registration shape file
-
Water balance sign convention - The water balance documentation has been completely re-written. In doing so, a couple of sign errors were found in the wbl.config file. These are only related to the display of water balance items and improve the internal consistency of the water balance items.
-
Documentation - Many sections of the documentation have been updated and re-written, including the surface water sections, the water balance, and paved area function.
-
Various minor changes in the dialogs and default values.
Fixes
- Unit conversion for the solubility has been corrected when the units were not the base EUM unit type
- Well editor fraction value is now updated correctly when moving around in the well dialog
- A crash was resolved when AD was run with OL and no river.
- Water balance error fixed when using OpenMI and the SZ time step is greater than the UZ time step.
- The Zoom function now works on the map dialogs based on polygon shape files (e.g. Rainfall stations).
Known Defects & Workarounds
- Fixed map view cursor error side effect - In previous versions of MIKE SHE, occasionally the cursor changed from the default icon to a random icon when you moved the cursor onto the map view. This has been fixed, but it has introduced a side effect in some of the map view dialogs that was discovered too late in the Release process. In many of the map view dialogs, the cursor coordinates are no longer displayed. This can sometimes be resolved by reloading the map, by using the Refresh function, or by clicking on a target icon (e.g. in the Detailed Time Series dialog). We expect this problem to be resolved in the first service pack.
