Installation^ top
To install MIKE BASIN, please choose 'MIKE BASIN in the 'MIKE BY DHI' dialog that appears when inserting the DHI Software 2011 DVD and then press the 'Install' button.
MIKE BASIN 2011 is based on ArcGIS 10.0 including service pack 1. If you have ArcGIS versions prior to 10.0 installed it will not be possible to keep these.
The setup program automatically installs all necessary MIKE BASIN files and folders on your PC. Additionally, a 'MIKE BASIN' group is created, containing icon for MIKE BASIN, the MIKE BASIN Release Note.
License File and Dongle^ top
To use MIKE BASIN in licensed-mode please follow these steps:
- Make sure that the provided dongle is attached to the computer (parallel or USB port - for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition USB port only)
- The dongle driver is installed automatically during the setup of the program
- The MIKE software license file (DhiLicense.dat) may be retrieved using the Internet. A working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address are required. The license file may be retrieved in two ways:
- During installation of MIKE Software
- After installation of MIKE Software, by launching the License Updater through the start menu
- To retrieve your license file during installation of DHI Software, select “Local” when prompted to select the type of License Management, and then select “Internet” and follow the on-screen instructions
- To update your license file using the License Updater, simply launch “Start->Programs->MIKE BY DHI 2011->License Updater” and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Alternatively, the license file can simply be copied from the supply medium (attachment to e-mail from DHI or CD/DVD) in \Program Files\DHI\2011\License or Program Files (x86)\DHI\2011\License.
Product Invocation^ top
To start MIKE BASIN, go to Start -> Programs -> MIKE BY DHI 2011-> MIKE GIS and select 'MIKE GIS'.
MIKE BASIN cannot be started without a DHI configured Software Key and valid license files for ArcMap and MIKE BASIN. Please contact DHI's Software Support Center.
If the MIKE BASIN toolbars do not appear when starting up MIKE BASIN, the following steps may be taken:
Enabling MIKE BASIN for ArcGIS Extension
The MIKE BASIN extension may need to be enabled as follows:
- Select Tools from ArcMap™ menu bar
- Point to Extensions
- Check 'MIKE BASIN' and from the list of extensions and click Close button.
MIKE BASIN and MIKE BASIN Results toolbars
To turn on visibility of MIKE BASIN toolbars, proceed as follows
- Select View from ArcMap™ menu bar
- Point to Toolbars
- Make sure 'MIKE BASIN' and 'MIKE BASIN Results' have a box checked. If not then check the boxes.

New features^ top
-
New soil water (ZIMSched) and runoff (Modified SCS) models have been included in the irrigation module.
-
Specific models have been added to the irrigation module to allow rice crop modelling.
-
Input data for the irrigation method model is now specified as time series instead of constant values (values used in former versions are converted into a time series).
-
The irrigation input data can be modified via the macro programming interface.
-
Seepage loss from a catchment-reservoir or an irrigation node is now percolating to the associated catchment groundwater reservoir. Moreover a new option “Subtract Area From Catchment” has been introduced in order to exclude the area represented by a reservoir or an irrigation node from the catchment area in which they are located.
-
The return flow time series can now be specified either as a fraction or directly as a discharge. § A groundwater extraction limit can be specified as a depth time series for water users extracting water from groundwater.
-
An option to include reservoir releases in the tail water calculations (for hydropower) has been introduced.
-
The diagnostic tools have been improved e.g. it is now easier to check for missing model inputs and the problem reporter is now able to show rules where an error has occurred.
-
Two examples have been added. One models several types of crop and the second one shows how to use the new irrigation models for rice crop. A “demand factor” has been introduced as a new water user node property (this functionality is currently only available from the macro programming interface).
Minor Changes^ top
- The stream seepage assignment to groundwater in catchment polygons has been improved.
Fixes
- The storage demand rule from multiple reservoirs has been fixed.
Known Defects & Workarounds^ top
- If your system is a Windows XP system with Chinese, Japanese, Russian- or any other OS using a language based on non-ASCII characters, the authorization of the ArcGIS liecnse may fail if the ASR file is placed in a location where the path contains non-ASCII characters (e.g. Chinese characters). The workaround is to:
1) Copy the ASR file to a location with a path only including ASCII characters – e.g. “C:\Temp” or “C:\”
2) Launch the DHI GIS Administration software and when authorizing, point to the copied file now located in e.g. “C:\Temp” or “C:\”

| Tools: River tracing and catchment delineation tools |
Several issues with the river tracing tool and the catchment delineation tool particularly with respect to models that were created in MIKE BASIN 2009 are now fixed. Issues fixed when using the catchment delineation tool are: unexpected error messages, overlapping of reaches or catchment nodes being removed. Moreover, the correction solves a problem regarding the functionality of digitizing new catchments on an existing network. |
