Installation^ top
To install MIKE 21, please choose 'MIKE 21' in the 'MIKE by DHI Setup' dialog that appears when inserting the MIKE software 2011 DVD and then press the 'Install' button.
The setup program automatically installs all necessary MIKE 21 files and folders on your PC. Additionally, a 'MIKE by DHI 2011' entry is created, containing icons for various MIKE Zero and MIKE 21 utilities and links to documentation.
License File and Dongle^ top
To use MIKE 21 in licensed-mode please follow these steps:
- The MIKE software license file (DhiLicense.dat) may be retrieved using the Internet. A working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address are required. The license file may be retrieved in two ways:
- During installation of MIKE software
- After installation of the MIKE software, by launching the DHI License Updater through the start menu
- To retrieve your license file during installation of the MIKE software, select “Local” when prompted to select the type of License Management, and then select “Internet” and follow the on-screen instructions. Attach your hardware when prompted.
- To update your license file using the License Updater, simply launch “Start->Programs->MIKE by DHI 2011->DHI License Updater” and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Alternatively, the license file can simply be copied from the supply medium (attachment to e-mail from DHI or CD/DVD) in \Program Files\DHI\2011\License or Program Files (x86)\DHI\2011\License.
- After completed installation, ensure that your hardware key is attached to the system.
Product Invocation^ top
To start MIKE 21, go to Start -> Programs -> MIKE by DHI 2011 -> MIKE Zero and select 'MIKE Zero'. Then you can select MIKE 21 from within the MIKE Zero Shell
Starting MIKE 21 without a DHI configured Software Key and valid license files causes the program to run in Demo mode. If this happens, a message box will inform you during program initialization. Running in Demo mode, MIKE 21 supplies full access to all editors, computational engines and editing facilities. However, restrictions apply to the setups that can actually be executed as a model simulation.

New features^ top
Every new release of MIKE 21 consists of new modules, new features and/or corrections to problems or significant inconsistencies discovered in previous releases. Please find short descriptions of the most significant news in Release 2011 below.
MIKE Zero
- MIKE to Google Earth: A new tool that can be used in conjunction with the Google Earth Viewer to display contour maps of georeferenced dfs2 data files. This tool replaces the older GE Plugin and has additional user-defined variables such as color scaling, datum shift and image size.
- Climate Change: A new tool that can generate future climate change scenarios based on existing setups.
- Geodesy Utilities - new projection types: Stereographic North Pole and Stereographic South Pole.
- Improved Mesh Generator facilities:
- Improved handling of large scatter data sets
- Optimized speed in scatter data interpolation
- Prioritization of scatter data in interpolation
- Mesh refinement using bisection
- Plot Composer - Rose plot: 3rd item to define duration of event
- MIKE Zero Toolbox - new Time Series Batch Conversion tool: Batch conversion between dfs0, ASCII and EXCEL files
MIKE 21 'Classic'
- Parallelization using OpenMP resulting in improved performance (0-50% speedup) - (Single Grid Only)
- Special single precision option removed
MIKE 21 Flow Model FM
- Improved performance: Parallelization using the domain decomposition approach and the message passing interface (MPI). The parallelization is implemented for all modules.
- New Flather boundary conditions: Non-reflective open boundary
- New output item: element area
MIKE 21 Spectral Waves
- Improved performance: Parallelization using the domain decomposition approach and the message passing interface (MPI).
- Improved description of structures
- Output of wave power
- An error has been corrected in connection with the coupled formulation for the air-sea interaction (fully spectral formulation). The stopping criterion has been corrected in the iterative procedure for calculation of the total stress as function of the wave induced stress and the wind speed. This correction may influence the calculated results.
MIKE 21 Mud Transport FM
- Improved performance: Parallelization using OpenMP of Mud transport process calculations
- Dynamic time step in generic mud transport subroutines to resolve problems with settling and mass conservation.
MIKE 21 Sand Transport FM
- Changed behavior for pure current description: For equilibrium transport description both bed load and suspended load is reduced in case of limited layer thickness.
MIKE 21 Particle Tracking FM
- Improved performance: Parallelization using OpenMP
- Dynamic memory allocation for particles
- More flexible specification of sources
- New output functionality:
- 2D output of deposited material and concentrations within a given z-range
- Flexible output of particle track data
MIKE 21 Oil Spill
- Oil Spill based on rectangular grid: New improved oil spill template
- New Oil Spill model in FM series
- Accessed via a new combined ECO Lab/Oil Spill user interface in the FM Editor
- New oil spill template (same as in the 'classic' series)
MIKE 21 Curvilinear
- Optimization of code utilizing parallel processing
- 64 bit application thus able to solve larger systems
MIKE 21 Toolbox
- Cyclone tool: Complete revision including new choice between four different parametric formulations
