The setup program automatically installs all necessary MIKE SHE files and folders on your PC. Additionally, a 'MIKE SHE' group is created, containing the icon for MIKE SHE.
License File and Dongle^ top
To use MIKE SHE in licensed-mode please follow these steps:
- Make sure that the provided dongle is attached to the computer (parallel or USB port - for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition USB port only)
- The dongle driver is installed automatically during the setup of the program When using Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, the driver for the hardware key must be installed manually. Please follow the installation guideline here.
- The MIKE software license file (DhiLicense.dat) may be retrieved using the Internet. A working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address are required. The license file may be retrieved in two ways:
- During installation of MIKE software
- After installation of MIKE software, by launching the License Updater through the start menu
- To retrieve your license file during installation of MIKE Software, select “Local” when prompted to select the type of License Management, and then select “Internet” and follow the on-screen instructions
- To update your license file using the License Updater, simply launch “Start->Programs->MIKE by DHI 2009->DHI License Updater” and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Alternatively, the license file can simply be copied from the supply medium (attachment to e-mail from DHI or CD/DVD/floppy disk) in \Program Files\DHI\2009\License or Program Files (x86)\DHI\2009\License.
Product Invocation^ top
To start MIKE SHE, select the 'MIKE SHE icon under the 'MIKE SHE' group, or go to Start -> Programs -> MIKE by DHI 2009 -> MIKE SHE and select 'MIKE SHE'.
Starting MIKE SHE without a DHI configured Software Key and valid license files causes the program to run in Demo mode. If this happens, a message box will inform you during program initialization. Running in Demo mode, MIKE SHE supplies full access to all editors, computational engines and editing facilities. However, restrictions apply to the setups that can actually be executed as a model simulation.

New features^ top
Every new release of MIKE SHE includes new modules, new features and corrections to problems or inconsistencies discovered in the previous release, as well as all the changes made in Service Packs and Hot Fixes since the last release.
In Release 2009, there are two key new features:
- User interface for the Random Walk Particle Tracking (PT) module - The Random walk particle tracking module tracks the movement of thousands, or even millions, of particles moving in the 3D saturated zone flow field. Particles are registered when ever they leave the model or enter specified zones, allowing you to easily and quickly determine groundwater age, transient capture zones, and actual influence areas. The PT module generates shape files the start locations of selected particles or the locations of all intermediate positions. The PT module has been available and used by a variety of MIKE SHE users for several years, but the complex text file based input has made it difficult to use. We hope many more MIKE SHE users will appreciate this powerful tool.
- Map projections in MIKE SHE - MIKE SHE users can now enjoy the benefit of using GIS map projections directly in MIKE SHE. The internal workings of the user interface has been updated to allow any of the hundreds of supported map projections instead of the local coordinate NON-UTM project that has until now been the only option. The only restriction is that all maps in MIKE SHE must be in the same map projection, which is defined when you specify the model domain and grid. Related bonuses include the ability to rotate your model domain and grid relative to the rest of the spatial input data and to use the expanded Map Explorer and Google Earth functionality in MIKE ZERO.
Release 2009 also includes all of the changes made in the Service Packs and Hot fixes since Release 2008. All of the changes are described in the Service Pack Release Note. However, since the last Service Pack the following Hot Fix changes have been made in MIKE SHE:
- Wrong calculation of Mass Flux from SZ to UZ in a Water Quality simulation with all components included. As well in the WQ engine executed from the GUI as in the old AD engine executed from a command prompt.
- The mass flux (due to upwards flow) is correctly calculated and also taken from the upper layer of SZ. However, in many cases UZ only receives a reduced amount of this mass. The error does not appear as a UZ or SZ error in the mass balance output (dfs0 and print log file) but the sum of UZ input terms exceeds the value of the Total UZ input term.
- A Steady-State MIKE SHE WM simulation with SZ + Overland + River stops with an error message during the initialization due to an un-initialized file name (name of the MIKE 11 HD result file).
- The hot start function now also includes the SZ Linear Reservoir model (water height in Interflow and Baseflow reservoirs). Until now the SZ LR model has used the initial water depths specified in the she file, also when hot start was specified.
- An error in the handling of Precipitation Sources in a WQ simulation which only includes the Saturated Zone: If one or more of the sources are time-varying the simulation stops after the first time step with an error message telling that the start and end times can’t be identical. If the sources have a constant input value, the simulation succeeds but the calculated source input is wrong.
- Due to an error in the time step control, the calculated Overland time step in some cases becomes zero in a long WQ simulation (100 years or more) which includes the Saturated Zone and the Overland component. If the simulation includes time-varying Overland Sources, the simulation will also stop with the start- and end time error message in this case.
- The Calculate Statistics function was optimized to run much faster
- The static X-array in the MODFLOW Extraction utility was increased to allow extraction from much larger models.
Release 2009 also includes numerous minor changes and corrections including:
- Changes to the OpenMI handling of metrological data to ensure that it is processed during the correct time step.
- An additional output item called Total Recharge, which includes all distributed exchange between the UZ and SZ, SZ and OL, ET from SZ, and bypass and macropore flow to SZ.
- A fix to the allocation of inundation arrays to allow flood code inundation with very large models.
- All time variables in the WQ engine have been changed to double precision to allow very long WQ simulations.
- Soil evaporation is no longer extracted when the soil is covered by snow.
- Point theme shape file interpolation is allowed even if the values are integers
Other notable changes include:
- GeoScene3D - GeoScene3D is still supported in MIKE SHE, but is no longer installed with MIKE SHE. If you have installed GeoScene3D, then two extra dialogs are available to allow you to open your pre-processed data and results in GeoScene3D. Users that previously installed the basic version of GeoScene3D that was available with MIKE SHE in Release 2007 and Release 2008, can safely uninstall this program.
- The MODPATH particle tracking utility has been removed due to serious internal programming conflicts that prevent it from running. We expect to have a rewritten version available for the next Release.
Known Defects & Workarounds^ top
In any software, there are known issues that cannot be fixed before the release. At DHI we strive to fix all significant issues as soon as possible. However, you should not the following significant issues that we intend to fix in upcoming service packs:
- The Run Statistics function does not handle units of feet correctly because all calculations are done internally in meters.
- Interpolation of integer codes from polygons is not always done correctly when small polygons are completely enclosed by larger polygons. We recommend that you convert detailed polygon layers to a dfs2 grid file before using the data in MIKE SHE.
- When using the shape file output from the Run Statistics function you need to open and save the shape file in a GIS program before you can use it.
- The transfer of solutes via the irrigation module is not yet supported.
-
The transfer of solutes from OL to MIKE 11 works fine, but the transfer of solutes from MIKE 11 to OL during overbank spilling and flood inundation is missing.
- The MIKE Zero Toolbox Concatenation tool does not work with MIKE SHE output files.
- MIKE SHE does not support Lat/Long coordinate systems, but only projected coordinate systems even though the Model Domain dialog appears to allow the selection of Lat/Long.
MIKE SHE 2009 Service Pack 1 - May 2009
No changes were made in MIKE SHE for Service Pack 1 (SP1).
MIKE SHE 2009 Service Pack 2 - June 2009
In Service Pack 2 (SP2) several changes are made in MIKE SHE including:
- An "Include all particles" option has been added in the PT Pathline extraction module.
- The WM log files are no longer deleted when you start a WQ simulation.
- The MShe_FlowThroughLine.exe utility now outputs by SZ layer.
- The PT module now loads river data correctly when the PT input is not from the current .she file.
- The Green and Ampt iterative solver was adjusted to prevent non-convergence in some case. The log file now contains Green and Ampt solver statistics.
- The calculation of AD dispersion coefficients was fixed so that they are now symetric in X, Y and Z.
- Plus several minor adjustments were made in the User Interface text and logic.
MIKE SHE 2009 Service Pack 3 - October 2009
In Service Pack 3 (SP3) several changes are made in MIKE SHE including:
- The MOUSE-MIKE SHE coupling was updated to more accurately simulate buried tunnels
- A compiler error was fixed that occasionally caused a crash when Gradual Drain Activation was used
- The tolerance specification was relaxed for grid orientations close to zero. This caused unnecessary error messages due to round off errors in the calculation of rotated grids.
- An error was fixed in the interpolation of topography from point-theme shape files which resulted in slight shift of the topography data with some coordinate systems.
- Preprocessor crash was fixed when using decay in the unsaturated zone
- A memory error was fixed in the time series selection utility that resulted in a MIKE Zero crash with very large MIKE SHE projects.
MIKE SHE 2009 Service Pack 4 - February 2010
In Service Pack 4 (SP4) several changes are made in MIKE SHE including:
- OL: The default value for the OL Gradient Threshold parameter was decreased to 1e-6. Senstivity testing has shown that the Threshold should be equal to or less than the topography gradient in the areas where overland flow should be calculated.
- UZ: The spline interpolation method for tabulated UZ values was changed from linear to logarithmic. This resulted in poor interpolated data sets when the table contains only a few values.
- UZ: Polgyon files are now allowed for the UZ 2-layer Water Balance soil distribution
- UZ: An index error was fixed when calculating potential ET in the 2-Layer UZ method. This will affect the estimated maximum infiltration in the first cell when the ET zone changes.
- PP: iLinktoLink array error message fixed. This occurred in some very large models with dense river networks.
- PP: Added internal checks for Lat/Long dfs2 files, which are not allowed in MIKE SHE
- WM: A rare problem was fixed, where the WM engine stopped unexpectedly related to printing output arrays in the LR SZ model.
- WQ: Default values for several of the WQ parameters have been updated
- WQ: The EUM units for Source Strength in the WQ module have been corrected. In previous versions they were "undefined".
- WQ: An array allocation error was corrected in the dual domain sorption bias factor module
- WQ: An error in the Kinetic sorption rate value was corrected
- WQ: An error in the UZ bulk density units was corrected
- WQ: An error in the half life value for solutes in the SZ secondary porosity was corrected
- GUI: Time series plots now display correctly with constant values
MIKE SHE 2009 Service Pack 5 - June 2010
In Service Pack 5 (SP5) some changes have been made in MIKE SHE:
- GUI/Engine: polygons that are completely embedded inside another polygon were not always recognized in the setup editor and engine. Please note that this change can result in changed simulation results in cases where the gridding is based on polygon shape files with overlapping polygons. Also note that holes in polygons are not supported
- GUI: When loading irrigation data from shape files an error message could occur referring to the dbf-file
- GUI: M11-MSHE River Links not displayed correctly when grid was rotated
- General: error messages improved
