The setup program automatically installs all necessary MIKE 21 files and folders on your PC. Additionally, a 'MIKE Zero' group is created, containing the icon for MIKE Zero and group entries for Documentation, Release Notes and Tools.
License File and Dongle^ top
To use MIKE 21 in licensed-mode please follow these steps:
- Make sure that the provided dongle is attached to the computer (parallel or USB port - for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition USB port only)
- The dongle driver is installed automatically during the setup of the program
- The MIKE software license file (DhiLicense.dat) may be retrieved using the Internet. A working Internet connection and a valid e-mail address are required. The license file may be retrieved in two ways:
- During installation of MIKE software
- After installation of the MIKE software, by launching the DHI License Updater through the start menu
- To retrieve your license file during installation of MIKE software, select “Local” when prompted to select the type of License Management, and then select “Internet” and follow the on-screen instructions
- To update your license file using the DHI License Updater, simply launch “Start->Programs->MIKE by DHI 2009->DHI License Updater” and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Alternatively, the license file can simply be copied from the supply medium (attachment to e-mail from DHI or CD/DVD/floppy disk) in \Program Files\DHI\2009\License or \Program Files (x86)\DHI\2009\License.
Product Invocation^ top
To start MIKE 21, select the 'MIKE Zero' icon under the 'MIKE Zero' group, or go to
Start -> Programs ->
MIKE by DHI 2009 -> MIKE Zero and select 'MIKE Zero'.
Starting MIKE 21 without a DHI configured Software Key and valid license files causes the program to run in Demo mode. If this happens, a message box will inform you during program initialization. Running in Demo mode, MIKE 21 supplies full access to all editors, computational engines and editing facilities. However, restrictions apply to the setups that can actually be executed as a model simulation.

Every new release of MIKE 21 consists of new modules, new features and/or corrections to problems or significant inconsistencies discovered in previous releases. Please find short descriptions of the most significant news in Release 2009 below.
Documentation
- Overview of documentation available for all MIKE Zero products at Start -> Programs -> MIKE by DHI 2009 -> MIKE Zero -> Documentation.
MIKE 21 Oil Spill – User Guide for Oil Spill model, The guide (PDF-format) is available in
C:\Program Files\DHI\2009\MIKE Zero\Manuals\MIKE_21-3_Integrated_Models\OS
MIKE Zero
- Project Explorer: Files shown in Project Map can be exported and automatically shown in Google Earth (if installed)
- Geodesy Utilities - new projection types: Hotine Oblique Mercator, Oblique Mercator, Rectified Skew Orthomorphic and Rotated Longitude/Latitude
- Improved Mesh Generator facilities. Examples of new functionalities are:
- Insertion of boundary lines for interpolation
- Mesh analysis. Identifies bad elements, enables edit and may improve performance considerably
- Adding, moving and deleting nodes in existing mesh
- Modifying elements in existing mesh (collapse and merge elements)
- Re-triangulation of selected region in existing mesh
- Re-interpolation of selected region in existing mesh
Computational Models and Tools
- Computational performance: All marine engines as well as MIKE Flood now come in a true 64-bit version allowing for:
- Larger memory access
- Speed performance (5-15%)
MIKE 21 Boussinesq Waves
- Computational performance:
- Parallel processing introduced for BW. The parallel computation employs shared memory OpenMP protocols taking advantage of the capabilities of multiprocessor and multicore CPUs.
- Additional performance increase by code optimization and reordering of computational mesh for memory optimization
MIKE 21 Flow Model FM, Mud Transport
- New Dredging module:
- Tracking of (continuous) sediment spills from moving dredgers
- Type of spilling can be defined in more detail (type of dredger or dredging phase)
- Update of the seabed
MIKE 21 Oil Spill
- New Oil Spill module based on rectangular grid:
- Re-designed oil spill module
- Vertical transport based on buoyancy of oil, droplet size and dispersion
- Horisontal transport as function of hydrodynamics, wind and gravitational forces in slick: spreading
- Weathering forces includes biodegradation, evaporation, emulsification, dissolution, sedimentation and photooxidation
